Press Release: The founder of PRO Leadership, in his new book, unveils 12 soft skills that make or break one’s success

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                               Press Release

New book unveils 12 soft skills that make or break one’s success

Soft Skills That Make or Break Your Success: 12 soft skills to master self, get along with, and lead others successfully by Assegid Habtewold- a leadership expert and soft skills workshop facilitator, is now available. The book is based on a story and shares great insights, approaches, and tools essential to develop the 12 vital soft skills that make or break one’s success.

Silver Spring, MD, July 13 2017 (Success Pathways Press) Research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford Research Center revealed, “85% of job success comes from having welldeveloped soft and people skills, and only 15% of job success comes from technical skills and knowledge (hard skills).”  Unfortunately, many professionals over depend on their technical expertise. They neglect to develop their soft skills proactively and in turn pay dire prices individually and cause havoc in their organizations. Common workplace complaints such as high turnover, conflict, and low productivity many companies experience come down to lack of certain soft skills.

The book is based on the story of a successful professional (Dan) who was promoted to lead a multimillion-dollar project because of his excellent technical skills. Unfortunately, due to lack of some soft skills, problems started to pop up where he couldn’t get along with his peers, and lead his team members successfully. Dan almost got fired by his immediate boss (Susan) from leading the project until the CEO of the company (Paul) negotiated a deal that required him to attend a three-part Soft Skills Development program and to work with a mentor (Rafael) to continue leading the project. The book narrates how the problem began, the negotiations, and the main discussion points of the 12 mentoring sessions. Each chapter summarizes the three key talking points of Dan and Rafael: a) Four insights Dan gained from each workshop, b) The assessments, processes, models, and tools he found helpful, and c) Immediate actions he plans to take as a result of attending that particular workshop.

When asked why he wrote the book, Dr. Habtewold responded, “I worked as a researcher for an international research organization for more than five years up until I came to the US in 2005. Between 2005 and 2007, I was a production operator and then a software engineer working for a multinational corporation. These opportunities gave me chances to work with outstanding professionals. However, the majority of them, like Dan, they struggled to get along and continually advance in their career due to lack of certain soft skills. Since I became a trainer in 2007, I’ve continued to witness the dire prices of lack of soft skills at individual and organizational levels. That was why I decided to write this book to play my share in empowering individuals to develop those critical soft skills that determine their success….”

Soft Skills That Make or Break Your Success is unique from other similar books because it shares:

  • Data that show how soft skills play the lion’s share for one’s success. Here are just two examples: “46% of new hires fail in the first 18 months, and 89 percent of them failed for attitudinal reasons [soft skills]. Only 11 percent failed due to a lack of hard skills.”More than 1 million employed U.S. workers concluded that the No. 1 reason people quit their jobs is a bad boss or immediate supervisor.” Such bosses lack the vital soft skills necessary to get along and lead their team, and thus, they cause chaos, high turnover, and low employee morale.
  • Stories like Nikola Tesla- the legendary inventor, who died poor and in isolation due to lack of soft skills.
  • President Donald Trump’s Twitter war with President Enrique Pena Nieto over US-Mexico border to illustrate the vital role soft skills like negotiation play to get along and lead high stake negotiations between nations. The book offers some key lessons from this Twitter feud between two presidents that can be used in any negotiation.
  • Some stories of the author including the culture shock he experienced during his early days in the US, and how he worked on his cultural intelligence to get along with diverse people in his new home. He also shared latest practical examples, case studies, and lessons he learned from his readings and experience as a former professional and now a facilitator of soft skills workshops.
  • Many other valuable lessons.

The 12 soft skills that are covered in this book are industry and culture neutral. In whichever industry and country you may belong, they empower you to achieve extraordinary results in your personal life, career, and business. The book contains great insights, tools, and processes that enable you to develop the 12 soft skills that make or break your life, relationships, career, or business.

Uber’s Board member forced to resign for his unsubstantiated disparaging remark against women

New York Times reported that David Bonderman resigned from Uber Board after sexist remark.

What happened was that “At an Uber staff meeting to discuss the company’s culture, Arianna Huffington- another board member, talked about how one woman on a board often leads to more women joining a board.”[i] In response, David Bonderman- a fellow Uber Board member, made a disparaging comment against women, “Actually, what it shows is that it’s much more likely to be more talking.”

Because of this spillage, Bonderman was forced to resign.

Interestingly, his bias toward women was unsubstantiated. A recent study shows that “Men talked far more than women did at meetings.”

This shows that many men (some Women) may have both conscious and unconscious biases that discriminate women but far from the truth. This requires actions at multiple levels. It calls to take proactive measures than just reacting when these kinds of biases surface. We at PRO Leadership are committed to contribute our share at all levels.

Becoming a unique leader

When we review history, those who succeeded as leaders were independent thinkers.

Look around you. If you see successful leaders and study them very closely, they are unique and independent thinkers.

Unfortunately, without them knowing, many contemporary leaders are influenced by and are victims of ‘popular’ thoughts.

The challenges your country, community, community, and organization have been facing are unique that require uncommon thinkers.

Uncommon thinkers don’t allow popular views to deter them from entertaining out of the box thoughts to come up with uncommon solutions.

Unique leaders with their uncommon solutions chart new paths to take their country, community, and organization to the next level.

Do you aspire to become a unique leader? Decide today, if you haven’t yet, to become an independent thinker. Task your mind to be different…

Becoming an independent thinker  doesn’t mean one doesn’t learn from others. It doesn’t mean you don’t read what others have to say. If there are others who have already faced the same problem and challenge, it’s wise to learn from their successes and failures. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, and duplicate the same mistakes others have already committed. But, use these as stepping stones. Employ your boundaryless mind to come up with enduring and sustainable solutions…

Stop being a duplicate. Dare to be different…

Stop buying into everything that is popular.

Open your eyes and ask tough questions, and seek the right answers even if the price to get such answers is expensive and may cost you scarce resources such as your time, energy, and finance.

Constantly learn and grow. Analyze and process the existing data and draw lessons.

But, make sure that you come up with your own independent and unique thoughts and solutions that are right fit to the challenges your people are facing.

Becoming independent thinker, and a unique leader increases your authenticity and credibility. If you’re just a duplicate, why don’t you bow out of this race of leading others…

Go ahead of your people, think independently, dare to be unique in your styles and approaches to come up with fresh and powerful ideas that are practical 21st C level solutions.

The world is desperately looking for unique leaders who are independent thinkers. You are a candidate!

The one thing leaders need more than anything else- Trust

If there is one thing- more than anything else, leaders need is TRUST.

Without trust, it is unlikely to rally your supporters, partners, and other stakeholders.

Unfortunately, trust is a rare commodity.

Very few leaders consciously build, and sustain trust.

Building trust may take years, if not decades, but losing trust takes one wrong word or misstep…

Your passion, zeal, smartness, knowledge, communication, what have you, cannot substitute the place of trust in your leadership.

Without trust, you cannot bring impactful changes in your organization, community, and/or nation…

Recently, I was asked to facilitate a leadership retreat session on building trust. The workshop was very interactive and we covered important points that were aimed at empowering participants to understand:
  1. The place of trust in building an effective and functional team
  2. How can they consciously and proactively generate trust
  3. How can they constantly maintain trust
  4. Things that may erode trust
  5. And more…
From one to ten, one being untrustworthy and ten highly trustworthy, how do you measure your trustworthiness?
  • Ask someone else to measure your trustworthiness.
  • If you scored below 8, do you know the reason (s) why?
  • Most importantly, going forward, what are your strategies to build trust? Remember, you can consciously and proactively generate trust.
If you need help in this regard, let’s know…
Good luck!

Impactful Leadership Begins With Self-leadership

Impactful leadership begins with self-leadership. The latter is the foundation for lasting and enduring leadership…

If you review history, you could be able to find out easily that leaders who left legacy were self-aware. They started their leadership journey off on the right foot.

Such leaders first led self well before they ventured out to lead others.

Unfortunately, many cultures nurture their inhabitants to seek leadership by conquering something, someone out there before they master self first.

Very few self-aware individuals, pay their dues by leading self prior to demanding follower-ship from others.

Self-aware leaders know:

1. Who they truly are.
2. Why they are here on this planet.
3. Their strengths,
4. Limitations, and
5. Blind spots.

Self-aware leaders first discovered who they are and why they were here on earth. Don’t forget, however, that their WHY is about serving others based on their uniqueness, talents, and gifting…

Most importantly, self-aware leaders go out each day to lead self toward pursing their mission. They are focused. Their singular preoccupation is to release their potential and die empty!

Join our mailing list!

In the process of leading self, however, they inspire and influence others through their commitment, example, and character.

Remember, self-aware leaders are not out there to impress, manipulate, and use others for their narrow agendas.

Self-aware leaders are not out there to feed their ego, and beg for applauds, and to seek mere recognition to feel good, even if what they do, at the end of the day, bring the attention, appreciation, and recognition from those they serve! But the latter aren’t what motivate them…

What is your motive to lead? Can you keep on serving even if you don’t get the admiration, recognition, and applauses of others?

You see, self-aware leaders are not out there to conquer and rule others in the name of leadership. They are on their lane. They don’t trip others and stumble by leaving their lane and crossing into the lanes of others.

It’s your choice.

Do you want to get fulfilled in life, and leave legacy that will remain intact long after you’re gone?

Well, begin by:

1. Knowing who you are,
2. Picking your unique lane, and
3. Leading self by serving others based on your passion, strength, and competitive advantage.

The point is: Don’t just go out there to lead others. Begin with self first.

Once you succeed to lead yourself well, the rest is easy.

Once you could be able to influence self enough, inspiring and influencing others won’t be that much challenging. It becomes your second nature…

PRO Leadership, PRO Women!

Today, millions of people- the majority of whom are women, around the world marched to defend women’s rights. They chanted: “Women’s rights, human rights!”

Though women constitute more than half of their respective communities, shoulder 75% of responsibilities, women are paid less, and systematically denied taking leadership positions. This inequality and discrimination is sad and unacceptable in the 21st C. This injustice doesn’t just affect women alone but also their communities, organizations, and the entire human race. Each community and nation is paying dire prices for failing to empower women to take leadership in the areas of their passion…

Play your leadership share toward peace, democracy, and tolerance!

A couple of hours ago, Donal J. Trump, took the oath of office and became the 45th president of the US. So many things had happened this morning at the wake of Donald Trump’s inauguration.

In one hand, voters who supported his candidacy celebrated and rejoiced this milestone while some of those who voted against him were out this morning in the capital city’s streets protesting- expressing their frustrations and anger…

Whether you’re a supporter of Trump or not, you cannot just ignore the fact that, after this year’s divisive and controversial election, power is transferred peacefully. We just witnessed one of the rarest events in the world! This makes America unique!

On the other hand, there are many countries in the world that aren’t free. People who live in these countries are deprived of their inalienable rights to choose their leaders. They watch this miracle from afar wondering when their turn comes. They marvel and wonder when they would be lucky enough, at least once in their life time, to witness such a glamorous ceremony in their land of birth.

The question to you, as a leader, what is your role (s) to bring democracy and establish a system where power is transferred peacefully from one leader/party to another?

Don’t underestimate your abilities. Even if it may seem insignificant in your very eyes, you have an indispensable role to play. You have what it takes. You’re equipped and packed with unlimited potential. Without your participation as a leader, your community, country, and the world won’t reach its maximum height!

Unless you play an active leadership role in the place where you live, work, and do business, the world around you and beyond continues to suffer. It remains incomplete. It desperately awaits your engagement. It’s your turn to play your leadership share in putting a dent on the destiny of your community, country, and the world at large. And, PRO Leadership exists to empower leaders like yourself with latest insights, tools, process, and great resources.

Using your talent, gifting, and experience, be a light for peace, democracy, and tolerance!

Take today- this moment- to think, reflect, and recommit yourself in contributing your leadership share toward peace, stability, democracy, justice, and liberty….

Becoming an inclusive leader

Successful leaders are those who are confident enough that they are not threatened when diverse views and ideas are expressed within their organizations.

They, on purpose, promote diversity of viewpoints. They are inclusive who entertain ‘organized disagreements’ knowing that such an organization enjoys a great deal of benefit from the collision of diverse ideas.

For their organizations (whether they are for profit, non-profits, charitable organizations, political parties, NGOs, etc.) to innovate and continuously improve and grow- they pay the necessary price. Some of the prices include but not limited to swallowing their egos, willing to listen, and open to be corrected when they are wrong, and when their ideas and proposals are inferior.

Your country, community, and the world at large needs confident leaders in the New Year who are willing to design within their organizations organized disagreements, entertain diverse views, and who are willing to tolerate outliers within their organizations.

Such leaders, rather than attempting to build cult and monotonous collection of ‘yes’ men and women, they are committed to the higher purpose of the organization and to the Greater Good by allowing people to speak their minds!

What kind of leader do you want to be? What will be your legacy? Do you want to be remembered as a control freak dictator? If you’re not in a leadership position right now, what kind of leaders are you supporting?

If you would like to become an inclusive leader, break away from this tradition of intimidating dissenters. Purposefully invite people that may not agree with you all the time.

Create a culture that promotes diversity and embrace inclusiveness if your desire is to tap into the talent, uniqueness, and experience of all of your people!

Wish you in the New Year success as you attempt to become an inclusive leader who is willing to incentivize organized disagreements!
